Hélène Vac

Born: 1985, France
Lives and works: Nouvelle-Aquitaine, France

Hélène Vac develops a pictorial practice shaped by a singular trajectory at the crossroads of architecture, landscape, and a sensitive observation of the living world. Trained at the École Spéciale d’Architecture in Paris, where she graduated as an Architect DESA in 2008, she built a decade-long career between Paris and Bordeaux while maintaining a committed drawing practice. This education—rooted in the conception of spaces and the projection of utopias—forms the foundation of her creative approach, in which space is not only constructed but felt and traversed.

In 2018, her collaboration with landscape designer Renan Rousselot marked a decisive shift. Immersed in landscape projects within the Bordeaux wine region, she confronted the living material of nature, its rhythms, and its ecological dynamics. This experience profoundly transformed her perspective and led her to reorient her artistic practice toward painting, embracing new mediums and supports to welcome an emerging sensitivity.

In her work, space reappears through the lens of landscape—not as a descriptive motif but as a field of energy. Influenced by Berthe Morisot, the Impressionist movement, and the gestural freedom of Joan Mitchell, Hélène Vac explores color as a structuring force. Acrylic paint, chosen for its speed and fluidity, allows her to work on increasingly large formats and to cultivate a vivid, instinctive gesture. Her palette evolves toward intense tonalities: bright reds, fluorescent hues, and luminous contrasts that move away from realism while maintaining a figurative anchor.

Her canvases, traversed by light and movement, oscillate between abstraction and landscape reminiscence. They invite an immersive experience in which color becomes space, breath, and vibration.

About

Creative Process

Hélène Vac’s creative process is rooted in a dual experience: that of the architect, who conceives space as structure, and that of the landscape practitioner, who observes the living world as a force in constant transformation. This fertile tension guides each of her works.

Her process often begins with an immersion in a place: a walk, a particular light, a color perceived in the landscape. She does not seek to faithfully depict what she sees, but rather to capture what circulates within it—its vibration, its density, its breath. The landscape becomes a pretext to experience color, to let it act as the raw material of emotion.

In the studio, her gesture is rapid and instinctive, supported by the short drying times of acrylic paint. She layers, erases, reactivates, building strata that evoke both the memory of the place and its internal movement. Color is never decorative: it structures space, creates tension, and opens new perspectives. Bright reds, fluorescent tones, and luminous contrasts become ways of generating intensity, breaking away from realism while preserving a trace of the sensory world.

Her process is a constant dialogue between control and release. Architecture brings rigor, composition, and an awareness of framing; landscape offers unpredictability, vitality, and energy. From this encounter emerges a painting that does not describe—it breathes, pulses, and invites the viewer to cross into an inner space.
